First Book

What is Friendiversary? Excellent question! Friendiversary is an annual celebration of two of our favorite things: friendship and reading. It is the anniversary of the day a friendship began - like the friendship between Elephant and Piggie, the stars of Mo Willems' award-winning early reader series.

In partnership with The Mo Willems Studio, First Book celebrates Friendiversary every February by providing thousands of brand-new Elephant & Piggie books to second graders at Title I schools in Massachusetts and Louisiana. We also provide Friendiversary kits – including activity books, posters, stickers and instructions – so classes can hold Friendiversary celebrations of their own.

Friendiversary celebrations are lively, engaging events that are fun and rewarding for educators and students alike. Students receive brand-new books to keep, which is always a cause for celebration! There can also be read-alouds, art projects and other activities. There is often food, dancing and merriment.

Most importantly, Friendiversary makes a positive impact on students at precisely the point when seeing themselves as part of a happy and successful reading community can make a huge difference in their lives. And now you can spread the Friendiversary fun by helping to sponsor a Friendiversary celebration!
