OVER 100,000 NEW BOOKS PROVIDED TO KIDS IN NEED ON BEHALF OF dd’s DISCOUNTS® STORES AND FIRST BOOK

Local Programs Including KIPP San Jose Collegiate, Girls Inc. Think College Now, and Estrella Family Services’ Paseo Preschool Celebrate and Receive Books

Estrella two children closeup MG 0476 CompressedSAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 9, 2013 – Students at three Bay Area schools and educational programs today received hundreds of brand-new books thanks to off-price retailer dd’s DISCOUNTS and the nonprofit First Book.

The three organizations – KIPP San Jose Collegiate, Girls Inc. Think College Now and Estrella Family Services’ Paseo Preschool – are among 114 schools and educational programs across ten states to get books as a result of dd’s Youth Literacy Fundraiser.

The fundraiser, which ran from Aug. 10 through Sept. 2, raised $280,500 and put over 100,000 new books into the hands of kids in need. Each of dd’s 122 participating stores raised funds for a specific local school or educational program, enabling them to obtain brand-new, high-quality books from First Book.

Representatives from dd’s, including Alma Mercado, Group Vice President of Stores, dd’s DISCOUNTS visited the three Bay Area programs this afternoon to celebrate the success of the Youth Literacy Fundraiser by reading with students and passing out books.

“dd’s proudly supports the vibrant communities we’re in and is excited to share our passion for youth literacy with local families and schools. This was our fifth annual fundraiser partnering with First Book and are pleased to see the continued success of this program,” said Alma Mercado, Group Vice President of Stores, dd’s DISCOUNTS.

“First Book continues to be amazed by the generosity and enthusiasm of dd’s staff and shoppers,” said Kyle Zimmer, president and CEO of First Book. “Lives are being changed and classrooms are being transformed… it’s truly remarkable what can be done when a community cares about its kids.”
