About UsFirst Book provides new books to children in need, addressing one of the most important factors affecting literacy – access to books. An innovative leader in social enterprise, First Book has distributed more than 65 million free and low-cost books to disadvantaged children and the programs that serve them. Think for a moment how profound it is that you can read this – and how critically important reading is to every aspect of your life, from checking the dosage on a prescription, to correctly completing a job application, to voting in an election. Reading is a skill that most of us take for granted, but unfortunately, that's not true for hundreds of children living at the poverty level in Deschutes County. In 2004, RSVP Read Together looked for resources to obtain new books for children less fortunate and found a champion in First Book! As a result, the First Book Deschutes County Advisory Board was established. Collaborating with RSVP we are able to tap into the volunteer skills, talents and interests of many who desire to get connected in promoting early literacy. The First Book Advisory Board members represent non-profit agencies, businesses and the community. Board members raise funds through community challenges, events and donations to provide book grants to programs serving children from low-income families. Advisory Board grants establish home libraries for the children. Through our combined energies, “all of us working together we will make a difference in our communities”. Get connected and find the best fit for helping to get new books into the hands of our children.
