First Book - Tacoma, WA

About Us

First Book provides new books to children in need, addressing one of the most important factors affecting literacy – access to books. An innovative leader in social enterprise, First Book has distributed more than 65 million free and low-cost books to disadvantaged children and the programs that serve them.

First Book-Tacoma is comprised of volunteers who primarily work in the non-profit sector; most of whom work in education.  The First Book-Tacoma Advisory Board awards new books to community organizations that offer tutoring or mentoring to low-income children, or have literacy programs that serve children from low-income families through book grants and special fundraising.

Recently at a clinic, a 16 month old girl picked out a flap book.  The mother was examining the book with the child, showing her how to open the flap.  The little girl would open the flap, giggle and look up at mom, who read what was under the flap.  We wouldn’t have had this wonderful experience without the donation from First Book-Tacoma. Thank you!” –Marsha Young, Child Reach Family Educator
