About UsFirst Book provides new books to children in need, addressing one of the most important factors affecting literacy – access to books. An innovative leader in social enterprise, First Book has distributed more than 65 million free and low-cost books to disadvantaged children and the programs that serve them. In 2009 First Book Philly provided 21,568 books to 3,334 kids in the Greater Philadelphia area. That’s 8 books for each child to take home – a mini library in neighborhoods where suitable children’s books are simply not available. The children come from traditionally underserved areas, where research shows that nearly two thirds of families own no books at all. They are enrolled in a variety of early learning, after-school and family care programs administered by neighborhood associations, schools, churches, and hospitals. First Book Philly is a totally volunteer organization – meaning there are no salaries and no overhead for the group, so every dollar contributed in a restricted gift can go directly to the purchase of books. Our goal in 2010 is to put 24,000 books in the hands of children. You can help: all it takes is $2.00 to buy a book. For $30, you can build a library. Give a book – give a smile.
