Director, Publisher Relations

About the position: 

The Director will report to the VP of Publisher Relations; tasks will include marketplace purchasing and special orders, maintain and develop publisher and author relationships, special projects and collection development, and staff management. Other duties may be assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintaining First Book Marketplace (FBMP) inventory and quantities to keep wide range of books available in all content areas and age groups and to allow for timely stocking of seasonally appropriate selections; includes monitoring inventory (with junior staff support) and reordering low inventory titles
  • Outreach and educational training for potential publishing partners about the First Book National Book Bank (FBNBB) and FBMP
  • Outreach and educational training for authors about ways to partner with FB and communicating with authors regarding opportunities and/or events
  • Cultivating new relationships with potential publishing partners including MOUs and related communication
  • Providing executive leadership with information re: publisher relations and strategizing re: the growth and future of Publisher Relations and First Book
  • Project and relationship management (leadership role)
  • Create and implement marketing campaigns to increase special orders
  • Responsible for annual financial goals
  • Supporting other First Book teams on a project basis including identifying content-specific needs and provide solutions, as well as coordination with book purchasers at national level
  • Training junior staff on publisher relations processes and other aspects of work and providing junior staff with guidance and feedback on work and work products

Qualifications:

  • Must be able to work in a fast paced environment and handle the unexpected, possess excellent organization and time management skill, and be self-motivated and energetic
  • Must possess strong leadership skills, flexibility, initiative, a positive attitude and the ability to think outside the box for solutions to problems
  • Must be very detail oriented. Must be extremely methodical and systematic in his/her organizational approach. Must be a quick, intuitive learner in regard to computer technology
  • Must be comfortable with massive amounts of data and data management using Microsoft Excel, databases, and other tools
  • Proficiency with MS Office products including Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook
  • Must be able to maintain the highest level of confidentiality  
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.  Exceptional organizational skills required

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Computer proficiency in Windows environment appropriate to position
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills; mature, professional attitude and appearance  
  • Must be able to work in a fast paced, multi-tasked environment as a member of a vibrant team
  • Must possess strong communication skills (verbal and written) and strong interpersonal skills  
  • BA/BS required; MBA or M.A. in a related educational field preferred
  • Prior work experience in private sector is a plus
