About the position:
Working in concert with the executive leadership team, the Vice President of Development directs First Book’s philanthropy program, providing strategic visioning, oversight and implementation of private gift fundraising, foundation relations, capital campaign, grants acquisition, planned giving and aspects of employee giving. The VP of Development helps forge new relationships to build First Book’s visibility, impact and financial resources. The VP of Development works closely with the VP of Strategic Alliances (who leads the corporate giving program for the organization) as well as all other members of the senior team.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Support and partner with the executive team and board members on all major fundraising initiatives.
- Collaborate with the executive team and senior staff to develop and implement a comprehensive development strategy to include individual and foundation giving, government grants, etc.
- Hold primary responsibility for development and execution of all proposals.
- Oversee research of funding sources and trends and help position First Book ahead of major funding changes or trends.
- Monitor all donor information; provide and present analysis to board and senior leaders.
- Develop and implement a stewardship program aimed at cultivating deeper ties with donors.
- Monitor and report regularly on the progress of the development program.
- Identify, develop and mentor the development team.
Qualifications:
- A proven track record of progressively responsible experience in fundraising/development, including major gifts and capital campaigns.
- Proven track record of raising funds and achieving ambitious revenue targets in a highly competitive environment as well as creating new fundraising programs and/or reinvigorating existing programs.
- Demonstrated knowledge in the identification, cultivation and solicitation of selected individuals or foundations for gift support.
- Creative, strategic thinker with experience in design and execution of strategic development plans.
- High energy and passion for First Book’s mission and vision – an innovator with an entrepreneurial spirit.
- The ability to influence and engage a wide range of donors and build long term relationships.
- Proven employee and team management skills. Must work well with cross-functional teams and have the ability to multi-task with ease.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills.
- Enjoy working in a fast-paced environment and possess excellent organizational and time management skills; self-motivated and energetic.

Education and/or Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree required
- MBA or M.A. in a related field preferred
- Prior work experience in private sector is a plus
