Help Xavier raise money for First Books
First Book provides new books to children from low-income families in communities across the United States and Canada. To learn more, visit

Please join me in raising money for First Book, a nonprofit organization that provides new books to children in need, addressing one of the most important factors affecting literacy – No access to books. Since 1992, First Book has provided an ongoing supply of new books to children participating in community-based programs.
For the local heroes serving these children in libraries, soup kitchens, Title I schools, preschool and after-school programs and the housing projects, First Book is a life-changing resource to them - enabling them to integrate high-quality, age-appropriate books and educational resources into their curriculum when serving and volunteering. No child should be without a book but they are. If you help me with this fight, we can make sure that some if not most will have the ability to own their own books and learn to read. Children also gain imagination from reading, which First Books and myself believe is important.
First Book has already distributed more than 60 million free and low cost books to disadvantaged children and the programs that serve them through their extensive volunteer network of Advisory Boards. First Book has offices in the U.S. and Canada.
FACTS:
•In middle-income neighborhoods, there are on average 13 books for every child. By contrast, in low-income neighborhoods, the ratio drops significantly to one book for every 300 children.
•More than 80% of preschool and after-school programs have no age-appropriate books for the children they serve.
•Up to one-third of American children enter kindergarten lacking at least some of the skills needed for a successful learning experience.
•64% of 4th graders eligible for school lunch program, a poverty indicator, scored in the "Below Basic" reading proficiency level.
•
•In several states third-grade literacy rates are used to project prison capacity needs. Over 85% of youth in the juvenile court system struggle with reading.
•Healthcare costs for people with low literacy are statistically four times higher than for the general population.
•American businesses spend over $60 billion annually in remedial training for their employees, much of it on reading.
